I’m so upset I have to say goodbye to my coleus when winter hits… anyone else feel the same?

Just take clippings, put them in water, and they’ll root within a week. No need for hormone rooting powder!

After they root, do you leave them in water or plant them in soil? I’ve had luck with soil, but I’m new to water rooting.

@Fifer
I keep the water fresh until it’s time to plant outside. You could also pot them in soil now if you have room. Coleus are very easy-going!

They’re perfect for beginners. So forgiving!

I take cuttings and grow them indoors over winter. They add such nice color to the house.

Very true!

I’d be so upset too. I’d try cuttings since I don’t have space for the full plants.

I noticed they grow as big as the pot allows. My big ones grew from the same small trimmings!

I planted coleus for the first time this year. Didn’t realize they wouldn’t survive our mild winters in zone 8a! I’m a newbie gardener and will try cuttings. Your photos are inspiring me to get more varieties next year!

@Winter
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but at least you can save some now! All of mine came from just 6 varieties, but they look different depending on sun exposure. That’s why I love them!

They’re so beautiful!

Thank you! They loved their spot in my yard!

WOW, so pretty. I love coleus.

They’re lovely indeed!

I take cuttings each fall, they root nicely over winter, and I replant them in spring.

I’ll try that, but I’ll miss them in the garden.

Good plan! Covering them and keeping them in a sunny spot can help them survive.

Especially for the ones in huge pots. I’ll be so sad to see them go!

I absolutely adore coleus, but so do the grasshoppers that invade my garden!

Really? Haven’t seen any around here, but thanks for the heads up! Coleus seem pretty hardy though.

That’s stunning! Two of mine actually came back this year, totally surprised me!

That’s awesome! I usually pinch the flowers, but this time I let some be for the pollinators.

Some of mine have been around for years. Take cuttings in fall, then more in March, and plant out in May.
