Wow, it actually worked!

We really grew saffron!

Any advice?
I’m a first-time saffron grower.
I just received my bulbs this weekend.

We planted them around this time and just let them be. We put them in a deep bed of compost and horse manure, then covered with mulch. I didn’t even notice the first one sprouting!

@Chen
Nice! You’ve got a green thumb lol :pinching_hand:t4:

I’m also new to saffron growing.

I planted ten bulbs in a window box using miracle grow cactus soil. I got about 80% sprouting, and some even put out two stems right away.

@Delaney
I just finished planting mine :star_struck: 10 bulbs. Let’s see what happens.

I stuck them in the ground 2 months ago. Make sure you’re in the right gardening zone and keep them away from rabbits. That’s all.

If you planted them now, it means your temperatures aren’t below 50 yet. They’ll sprout in 2 months when it gets colder, or you’ll see them next spring (no flowers) and then get to see them bloom next fall/winter.

@Micah
I’m in zone 10a and thinking about planting some this year. Should be fine if I act fast, right?

They are perennial bulbs that sprout in spring, die back, and then flower in fall. If you plant now and they don’t flower, they will next year. So go ahead and plant! Worst case, there’s always next year. You can’t really mess it up unless you plant them upside down.

Honestly, there’s a reason it’s so expensive.

Saffron is pricey because it has to be picked by hand, and you only get about three threads per flower, which requires a lot. A friend and I had saffron bulbs that didn’t get planted in time and bloomed in the bag!

I tried to grow it a few years back. I feel like the bulbs rot if they get too wet during the summer when they’re dormant.

I mentioned to someone that I’d put them in a well-drained raised bed next time.

Also, squirrels love to eat them, so get ready to guard your 50-cent bulbs from them.

@Baer
It looks like saffron crocus are hardy from zone 6 :tired_face: I wouldn’t risk it and would keep them in planters inside.

They call me mellow yellow, rightfully so.

We planted probably 20+ bulbs because my husband doesn’t understand moderation. It worked out this time since only about 4 have sprouted so far.
