What are your best gift ideas for gardeners

With Christmas coming up soon, I’m putting together some unique gift ideas for my gardeners’ newsletter to help us avoid the usual socks or Christmas sweaters under the tree.

Here’s what I have so far. What unique gifts do you think gardeners would love this year?

Houseplants (Snake plant, Peace lily, ZZ plant, Pothos, Spider plant, Philodendron are safe choices for plant lovers).

Garden Seed subscriptions: Services like Gardeners Box send curated seeds each month along with growing projects to keep gardeners busy all year.

Hand creams: Brands like Crabtree & Evelyn and Neal’s Yard Remedies offer great creams to soothe dry hands.

Flower & Plant art: Etsy and the Botanical Arts company have nice watercolor-style art prints, especially good if you know someone’s favorite plant.

Books: For example, the RHS Complete Gardener’s Manual is full of gardening ideas and advice.

Fiskars gardening tools: I really like this brand; they might be expensive but the quality is excellent.

Botanical Garden membership: A visit or membership to Kew Gardens is ideal for people in London who want a break from the busy city.

Designer watering cans: They can be pricey, but Haws cans look wonderful.

Secateurs: The Kurumi secateurs are costly but Monty Don says they are worth it. There are cheaper options available too.

What gardening gifts are you planning to give or would love to receive?

I usually don’t like people giving me plants. They often don’t match what I want, like my color scheme, and then I have to keep them alive, which I don’t enjoy. It would be nice if plants could be returned like clothes. I’d prefer gift vouchers.

National garden gift vouchers always work great for me

That’s a good idea for sure.

I just spent mine today on a large pot that I needed but couldn’t afford otherwise. Such a great gift.

A subscription to Gardener’s World magazine would be nice

@Jude
Thanks for suggesting the Hori Hori; it looks like a really useful knife!

Great ideas for plants. When I say safe, I mean that you can’t go wrong with these, as most people will appreciate them. Also, they tend to survive without needing too much care, which is perfect for when you’re away on holidays.

@Riley
Some of those houseplants may not be safe for people with cats.

@Riley
I’ve just added it to my list! I never knew about a hori hori before. It seems really versatile.

@Jude
I worry that soon the hori hori will become like my Edward Scissorhands gardening tool… though that might not be such a bad thing.

Lego has some lovely botanical sets, including gardens for those who want more plant-themed fun.

A slate sign saying ‘Trespassers will be composted’ for a potting shed or greenhouse door.

I got one a while back and it makes me smile every time I see it.

That’s hilarious!

I bought my wife a ton of screened topsoil. That gift was popular.

I always ask for National Garden Centre vouchers. They are reliable, and I can buy what I want without feeling guilty throughout the year. National Trust membership and plant labels are great too.

Good gloves that last longer than two weekends (Gardena has great ones).

My mom really enjoys the knee cushion I got her so she can kneel while gardening.

Do the Guardian’s suggestions have anything useful for you?

Thanks for sharing that. They have some interesting picks.

I need larger plant pots. All my plants are outgrowing their smaller pots.

Niwaki hori hori

Okatsune secateurs

These are my top picks. I have both and they cover most of what I need.
