Why did my Yellow Hibiscus produce a half and half flower? Anyone seen this before?

I bought this hibiscus at Home Depot, and it was supposed to be a yellow one, but now I have this flower that is half yellow and half another color. It’s really cool looking, but I’m curious what causes this? Anyone had this happen to their plants?

It could be chimerism. Basically, the plant may have both types of tissue in it. Sometimes this happens when a branch grows from the rootstock. What color was it supposed to be originally? That might help figure it out.

Never heard of chimerism before… but now that you mention it, I think something similar happened with my 4 o’clock plant. It grew two different colors too.

Yeah, it was sold as a yellow hibiscus. I’ve seen some posts online about half and half flowers before, so I wasn’t totally shocked, but still really surprised! It’s beautiful!

That’s just mutation at work. Plants are awesome like that. Sometimes the whole branch mutates, and you get what’s called a ‘sport’—that’s stable and you can even clone it. Other times, it’s just a flower. Could be due to all sorts of things like environment, chemicals, or even viruses.

That’s wild! :eyes:

That’s amazing! Never seen anything like it.

Wow, that’s so cool!

You should Google this!

Never seen this in my own garden, but plant mutations like this are always fascinating!

I’d pay to have one like that! It’s gorgeous.

Nature really is the best artist. Stunning!

Looks like what happens when my printer starts running out of ink. :joy:

Maybe someone threw some acid on it, and now it’s becoming a supervillain flower! :joy:

Haha, my boyfriend actually joked that maybe the bees did it. :joy:

I’d guess cross-pollination. Could explain the mix.
