What the heck is this… anyone know?

Looks like honeycomb… they probably started here and then left for a better spot. I saw something like this in south Florida a while ago, and a beekeeper came to take it since it was near houses.

Yep, I’m a beekeeper. It doesn’t happen a lot, but this is exactly how they look when they start and then leave. I still have a piece of comb from the first swarm I caught because they did something just like this.

@Zen
Haha, any telemarketers call you for honey orders yet? /jk.

Exactly! I had to double-check I wasn’t still in the beekeeping area on this forum.

@River
I’m not in any beekeeping groups here, but figured someone would know. I’ve never seen them out like this. Might have to check out some bee forums now!

Yeah, I think you nailed it.

Is it just wax left, and they took all the honey? Or did they never even get that far?

They likely never filled it. Bees can build comb really fast—sometimes in just a day or two. Then the scouts must’ve found a better place.

Too bad they didn’t leave a timelapse behind for us.

Is there enough wax there to make a small candle?

Maybe a tiny one. The wax looks thicker than it actually is since the cells are empty.

Actually, that’s pretty cool!

Sorry about your luck… your tree… and the empty honeycomb. Hope next time they stick around :smile:

Haha, I’ve thought about beekeeping, but doubt it’ll help my luck much :sweat_smile:

Who knows? Beekeeping might be the workout you didn’t know you needed! But yeah, won’t do anything for the tree :person_shrugging:

@Andi
Haha, true!

Looks like a honeycomb to me.

How long has the tree been like this? The leftover stuff looks like there used to be a much bigger comb.

I’ve lived here 9 years and only touch the branches that fall. I’ve never noticed a comb up there before, though I guess I don’t look up every day while passing the tree… maybe that’s why.

Yep, that’s honeycomb. It almost looks like some cells are capped, but that wouldn’t make sense… maybe just looks that way. Can you get a closer look?

It’s way too high up. I thought about climbing up there, but I’m not a teenager anymore.

@Sawyer
Find a brave 15-year-old neighbor to do it for you :joy: /s
