Are you in the US? You could try emailing your local agriculture extension office for help:

@Paz
Thanks! I’ll definitely do that.
Let us know what you find out!
I will! I found out my local ag office is only 10 miles away. Planning to visit them tomorrow afternoon.
@Lior
You could also try emailing them—they’re usually pretty responsive!
@Paz
I wish we had extension offices where I live. They sound super helpful.
This looks like nematode damage to me, but it also kinda resembles frass. Curious to see what others think.

Frass would wipe off unless it’s in spots chewed into the carrot. Looking forward to hearing what OP finds out.

What’s frass? I’ve never heard of it.

Frass is basically bug poop

Oh, frass! Sorry, my autocorrect got me there.
@Lior
Your phone was basically telling you to stop and go outside lol.

Looks like Root Knot Nematode damage. Here’s a helpful article: Control of Root-Knot Nematode in the Garden | Oklahoma State University

I misread that as ‘root knot noodle’

I actually spray nematodes in my garden for slug control. Aren’t they supposed to be helpful?
@Jalen
Some nematodes are beneficial, but root knot nematodes are harmful. They damage roots, causing bumps and blocking water and nutrients. Other nematodes can attack pests or improve soil health.

Thanks for the info! I recently harvested red potatoes with similar weird growths. Maybe they had the same issue as these carrots.
@Maris
I might’ve learned about nematodes in school, but I totally forgot. As an adult, I found out about them while dealing with a slug problem. Thanks for explaining, though—I appreciate learning something new!
