What kind of squash is this?

This doesn’t look like the usual Kabocha. I’m probably going to get roasted for buying this squash.

In Japan, any pumpkin is called kabocha. So they aren’t totally wrong. These are Black Futsu, which also come from Japan. Looks like someone got confused in translation.

In many countries, any orange squash is called pumpkin. But in the US, pumpkin is a specific type of squash. Even though the canned pumpkin we eat is actually made from a squash like butternut.

@Cade
Most canned pumpkin is Dickinson squash. Libby’s is the main brand. It’s funny how everyone says ‘canned pumpkin is squash’ since most pumpkins are just different kinds of squash. They’re basically all the same species, just different varieties.

@Fin
What happens when you drop a pumpkin? It turns into a squash. (That’s from the Wizard of Oz series, haha)

@Cade
In Australia, it’s not just orange pumpkins. Anything large and pumpkin-like, even blue or grey ones, are called pumpkins. Kent or Jarrahdale are common pumpkin types. Even butternut squash is called butternut pumpkin. Only things like summer squash are really called squash.

These are Black Futsu.

Great squash for cooking!

Is this the ingredient for Kombucha?

Is this from a new season?

Well, the sign says ‘Kabocha’…

I love growing these. It’s kind of like butternut squash, but I always eat it with the skin. I think it depends on the variety though. The kind I grow is dark green, and I’ve also had some that looked almost blue.

This pumpkin is good. It’s harder, and I like the taste.

Burn one, bro.

Definitely a warty goblin breed variety.

Here’s a traditional recipe. It’s also great in tonjiru (Japanese miso soup). There are other great recipes on this site, which is one of the best for Japanese food: https://www.justonecookbook.com/simmered-kabocha-squash/
