Roofers caused a lot of damage to my plants and I just can’t believe it.
Be careful for nails too.
I’m really sorry they messed everything up.

Yeah, I finally got the courage to check out the damage and start cleaning up. I found a bunch of nails everywhere.
@Ollie
Get one of those long poles with a round magnet at the bottom. They really help in finding nails after roofing work. It’s even kind of fun like metal detecting. You won’t believe how many nails you discover and you’ll be finding them for months. I feel really sorry about your plants!
@Tan
When we replaced our roof after a storm, we had a worker use a metal detector and magnet to collect any remaining nails on the ground. I thought that was really nice.

Sometimes people are nice because of liability.
@Parker
Yeah, when my parents got their roof done and I was going from place to place, I stepped on a nail. It was not fun at all.
So I guess the fear of liability encourages good behavior.

My husband is a roofer and he makes sure to check the yard for stray nails with his magnet after every job. The roofing crew you had was rushed and lazy and deserves a bad review.
@Tan
A magnetic sweeper is what that tool is called. I know this because I used one to clean up the 23,247 nails the roofing and siding crew left in my yard last summer.

They should know that this is not okay. Talk to the boss about it!

I did talk to them. All they gave me was an empty apology.

You deserve compensation. Don’t give up until you get it.

Calculate how much it will cost to replace what they ruined, add a bit for your time dealing with the mess, and take that off what you owe them for the roofing.

They usually tell you to move things within 3-4 feet of the house. It’s strange they didn’t warn you.
They might have assumed you knew.
While I feel for the person who posted this, it is their responsibility to tidy up the area.
The workers are there to do their job and don’t typically tiptoe around plants.
@Parker
So they should have said something beforehand. They may be there to do a job, but they work for you, not the other way around. No matter what work you’re doing, you always respect someone’s property. This was unprofessional on their part.

I’m giving a thumbs down for being right lol.
If you didn’t move stuff before the workers arrived, that’s on you. Just saying.
You sound a bit harsh.
But about common sense - the roofers, who do this for a living, should be aware if there are items around the house that might get damaged and should talk to their client.
This is terrible and very unprofessional. My roofers covered my gardens with big tarps and cleaned up after they were done. I hope this company gets a bad review from you.
I really feel for you. With some time and care, your plants should recover.
You should contact their supervisor or the company they work for and tell them they left trash and damaged your property. Let them know you want to be compensated and that you’d prefer to solve this without legal action, but you will if necessary. This usually makes them act faster.
@Parker
Yes, tell them you would rather not take things further but compensation is definitely due. You might want to write a review with photos and tag them wherever you found their service, whether it’s Google, Nextdoor, Facebook, this forum, Yelp, or the BBB.
