Should Gardening Be Taught in Schools?

Is gardening a skill that should be included in school curriculums?

It could be a great elective option.

Absolutely! Gardening isn’t feasible for everyone due to factors like space, time, or cost. For years, I lived in a 700-square-foot apartment with no patio. I managed with a few houseplants, but I couldn’t have imagined the gardening setup I have now.

Totally agree! Gardening isn’t just about maintaining your own garden; it’s also about educating people on where their food comes from, recognizing when companies aren’t truthful, and promoting a healthy diet through plant-based nutrition.

My middle school did have a gardening class, it was great. We learned the names of native plants, how to water appropriately, how to weed, and spent time on a farm planting, harvesting, and cooking the harvest!

My school offered a horticulture class, and it was easily my favorite. It was a great way to take a break and get outside during the school day.

This is very important. There is a movement to get children in K-8 outside more during the school day. It has substantial benefits and a school garden is ideal.
