Is there a good zone for growing poppies? I’ve tried about five varieties and only got one flower. Why are wildflowers so difficult to grow?
Wildflowers are adapted to specific areas, not just anywhere. These are closely related to the California poppy, known for the super blooms. If you don’t live in an area with a similar long dry period in summer and fall, followed by wet weather in winter, they won’t thrive. They typically get water from December to April and then nothing for the rest of the year. Super blooms usually start with the first big rain of winter, sometimes as early as November. Many places outside the southwest can’t support this growth cycle.
You could try to replicate these conditions by hand, but it’s not their natural way, so they might not perform as well.
Thanks! Ok this explains why I usually at least get daisies good to know!
I can see why! That color is stunning!
I had such bad luck with poppies this summer. No blooms, and my plant just won’t grow.
Stunning! There’s a variety called “Copper Pot” that looks like a new copper penny—it’s my garden favorite. But the sunny yellow is so cheerful!
