I’ve got mums that are already dead by the end of October. I’m in New Jersey and not sure what I’m doing wrong. Any advice?
They need water, my dude.

Yeah, funny thing is I’m a scientist, and when everyone said ‘water,’ I was like, oh… that makes sense. I feel dumb now.

You could try native aster. They’ll come back every year and don’t need much water. Very drought tolerant.

If you’ve got them in pots, try submerging the whole pot under water until it’s soaked. Best way to fully hydrate them.
@Kingsley
They’re planted in the ground, actually.
@Kingsley
You noticed they’re in the ground, right?
Mums lose their blooms quickly, but if you keep them watered, they can live for years and bloom again. Most people just don’t take care of them properly, and they die.

I don’t bother with mums anymore. In Texas, I’d have to water them daily or they’d die. Too much effort for fall plants, but they are pretty!
Fall aster works great in Texas and needs way less water. Mine get huge on drip irrigation. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPqPzubvt5Q. They’ll bloom for weeks in the fall and sometimes in spring too.
Do you water them every day? I’m in NY, and mine are doing fine.

Nope, not watering them daily… do you think it’s too late if I start now?

You’ll need to deadhead them too, but they might not bloom again this season.
@Avery
They need A LOT of water, especially because they’re often sold in tiny pots.
You could also plant native asters, which seem to bloom longer!

I barely do anything to my asters, and they’re blooming like crazy! I’m all in on planting natives now.
I didn’t even plant my asters, and they’re thriving. Love seeing all the bees buzzing around them after work.

Mums are for chumps, asters are the real deal.
Plant some asters instead, and they’ll come back year after year!
We haven’t had rain in Jersey in foreverrrrr! Maybe try watering more often, especially with this dry spell.

Haha, nice! That’s an all-time classic line!
