Mixing Mums: Can You Safely Split and Replant for a Multi-Color Display?

I’m planning to buy some mums that my local store has put out for fall, but they only come in one color per pot. I’d like to mix different colors and spread them across several larger pots. Is it possible to split the mums without damaging them, or would it be better to keep each color in its own pot? I want to arrange 3 different colors across 4-5 pots, but I’m unsure if splitting them is a good idea. What would you recommend?

Be sure to handle the mums carefully and keep the roots intact when splitting them.

I wouldn’t recommend splitting the mums, as you’re likely to damage them in the process. They are often planted closely together in the pot, and splitting them could result in uneven or awkward shapes. A better option would be to buy smaller pots of mums and plant a few together if you’re aiming for multicolored displays.

Some places also offer multicolor mum pots, so it’s worth checking around. Depending on where you live, you might be able to find them.

To be honest, I’m not a huge fan of mums, but I wanted to support this local establishment, and they only sell them as you described. If splitting them isn’t a good idea, I’ll probably just skip it. Thanks for your feedback!
