The roots are sown in the bottom pile and collected in the top pile. Despite just growing for five months after being planted in the ground back in May, it produced a fantastic crop. All of the roots have been cut off of the leaves in the second picture.
This is really cool. What exactly is your method for this? Just gather the old roots and pile leaves on top?

I bought organic turmeric roots and planted them about 4 inches deep with some compost mixed in after the last frost. I watered them only when the soil dried to encourage more root growth. I harvested these a few weeks ago before the first frost. The roots don’t have thick skin in 5 months, so long-term storage isn’t ideal, but you can still use and process them as you like. Starting the roots indoors can help with a longer growing season and provide thicker skin for harvesting. I hope this helps.

Awesome! Please share more details!
I’m surprised turmeric can grow in zone 6! I really want to try growing some.
How do you replant the bottom part? And how much did you end up harvesting?

That Hood milk container suggests you’re in Massachusetts. This is something I’d like to try too.
@Jory
CT, actually lol.
I’m looking forward to my turmeric harvest too so I can make space for other plants. I planted my first batch about 5 years ago in Puerto Rico and haven’t had to plant more since. I harvest about 30 pounds of turmeric every season. This happens because you don’t harvest all the roots, some are always left behind.
To those curious, just stick the root in the ground and it will grow. I wish I hadn’t planted it because it takes up too much space in my garden while I don’t even like turmeric, but my wife loves it.
Wow!
Goodbye inflammation!

Wow! What do you make with all that turmeric?
I just plan to dry it out and make some powder for long-term storage and use.

Is there a market in the US for turmeric roots once harvested? Or is it all for personal use?
It’s just for personal use.

They can’t arrest everyone for storing garden stuff in milk crates. I’m standing proud on that.
Yes, please share your method!

What do you use it for? Is it similar to ginger root?
