I think they’re asking how long that specific fruit has been on the tree.

It looks very much like a citron, which is one of the ancestors of the lemon.

So, what likely happened is that someone planted a citron seed and waited, or grafted a citron cutting onto some roots.

Almost every fruit tree needs to be grafted: apples, peaches, plums, cherries, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, tangerines…
If you plant a seed from a fruit, there’s a high chance you will wait a long time for it to bear fruit and that fruit will probably resemble some wild fruit, not the one you took the seed from.
I had a lemon tree in a pot on my balcony for 7 years and it never produced fruit after growing.

The tree might share parts of another tree; it’s tough to tell because it’s in a corner of my yard. It’s at least 30-40 years old… feels strange

Those look like citrons. They’re kind of like lemons but not exactly. They’re huge and have thick skin and minimal juice.
Citron jam is amazing.
