What do you know about the true Egyptian blue lotus?

Has anyone here grown the Egyptian Blue Lotus (or Egyptian Blue Waterlily)? I’d love to hear your experiences.

Beautiful plant! It’s actually not a true lotus, but a type of water lily. If I remember right, lotus flowers aren’t naturally blue.

The real name is Egyptian Blue Waterlily, but most people just call it Egyptian Blue Lotus.

Yeah, lots of people confuse water lilies with lotuses!

Is this species called Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea?

I had one once, but moving it indoors every winter was too much work. Only got one bloom in four years.

It usually needs temperatures above 25°C to bloom.

This plant is gorgeous!

It’s beautiful! I just got 10 seeds from a vendor and plan to plant them soon. Any advice? I’m in south Florida, zone 10b.

The seeds need a consistent temperature above 25°C to germinate.

Thanks for the tip! It’s been cooler here, so I was thinking of starting them indoors with grow lights set at 30°C. Would that work?

That should work well! Use LED grow lights made for plants.

You should check with Marilyn at Wonderful Waterlilies in Sarasota. She’s been growing them in Florida for years. Here’s the site: https://wonderfulwaterlilies.com/

Interesting! Back in those days, the Rhizomari were said to deal in plants like this. Some compounds in it supposedly cause, uh, unique effects. Did you try it? How did you prepare it?

Great job growing it! Enjoy the tea if you make some.

That’s not a real lotus, just saying.
