I get a bit down in the winter months and thought maybe some bright green leaves and the occasional flower might help. I know sunflowers aren’t exactly indoor plants and I’m okay if they struggle a bit – just want to try something more lively than typical houseplants. Anyone got advice?
Looks like your light’s too far from your plants. They need it way closer to thrive indoors.

The Aerogarden I have recommends about 2-3 inches above the plant tops, so maybe bring yours to at least a foot or less? Especially if it’s a bright light!

Keep the light close to the leaves, and raise it as the plants grow.
Or maybe lowering the plant could work too?
Not sure about the bin and metal bowl setup, but watch out for mold with no drainage. Go to a garden store for something small to start seeds in, then keep the light right on top of it and move it as the plants grow. When they’re ready, transfer to a proper pot and thin out if needed.
Hey, I get it, but wouldn’t a healthier indoor-friendly plant do more for your mood? Sickly plants might have the opposite effect.

Christmas cacti are super easy to grow!
Do you have a sunny window nearby? I don’t think a grow light alone will be enough to get sunflowers blooming. They’ll also need some support as they get taller.

I always have a fan running in my room, so that’s no problem!

Cool! You might need it on high to simulate outdoor wind. Helps plants grow stronger stems. And don’t forget drainage for that bin, or the roots will rot.
I feel you on needing color in winter! I grow tons of African violets, and they bloom like crazy all year.

Why do you think sunflowers specifically would help with your seasonal blues?
If it doesn’t have to be sunflowers, maybe Impatiens? They grow well indoors with low light, and I had luck with red dwarf ones.
Hang that light differently – those red LEDs can hurt your eyes over time.
Bring the light closer. A light meter can help you find the right distance, especially if you’re just getting started. Good luck!
Sunflowers indoors may not work well. Try forcing bulbs like tulips instead – they can bloom indoors, and with a bit of planning, you’ll have blooms throughout winter.
Your light’s too far from the plant. Try a Lux Meter app to check if you’re getting 1,000+ lux.
Yeah, that light needs to be a lot closer.
