You should get a ZZ Plant. You only need to water it about every 20 days and just leave it alone. It also looks nice.
Still useful five years after the original post, thanks.

Welcome! Don’t be intimidated. Think of plants like cut flowers: they look lovely, and even if they die while you’re learning, you got to enjoy them much longer than a bouquet!
For beginners, I always recommend the Peperomia. There are so many types to choose from so you’ll definitely find one that fits your style. They are sturdy and can handle a bit of neglect, but bounce back quickly. They handle varying light levels, and grow fast enough that you can see how they respond to your care. I’m not sure how common they are by you, but they’re easy to find here.
Dracaenas are a solid choice since they require little care and don’t need much light.
For ease and low light: snake plants, peace lilies, Christmas cacti, rubber trees, various ficus plants, fittonias, ZZ plants, pothos, hoyas, and tradescantias are great choices.
Any cacti and cute flower-like succulents will do well if you have a sunny window.
@Zuri
Can I have those little cacti and just keep them in a spot away from sunlight? I have this 20 cm empty area above my fridge; can I place them there?

All plants need light because it provides them with energy, but some can survive with less. Cacti, in general, need a lot of light, particularly from south-facing windows, so I don’t think that will work.
@Zuri
Ah, that’s disappointing.

Nope.

Thanks for the help.
Snake plants work well if you can hold back on watering them. My pothos has thrived in low light, and my spider plant has also been really easy to care for. You just have to make sure you give it the right amount of water and not over or underwater them.
@Noor
I came across a helpful website that talks about caring for the most common houseplants. Pothos seems interesting.

It’s in Finnish, sorry. http://www.huonekasvit.fi (it translates to houseplants.fi haha)
I usually give Sansevieria, Monsteras, and ZZ plants as gifts. These three plants have been well-liked and are nearly indestructible.
