My tomato plants made it through winter!

I didn’t expect them to make it, but they did! Have any of you had success with overwintering tomatoes? I’d love to hear your stories or tips for keeping them healthy moving forward.

I feel you. The Farmer’s Almanac says our last frost is around May 15.

Mine’s May 5. Still feels so far away. :frowning:

Lucky you! Here, the first 100°F day hits by May 3rd most years, and it’s been as early as late April.

And remember, that’s not even the 100% frost-free date. We got a freak frost on May 28 a few years ago, and it wrecked my garden.

@Murphy
Same here. We never plant before Victoria Day in late May, and we always keep frost sheets ready—just in case!

June 7th is my 100% frost-free date. Sometimes I take a chance and plant on June 1st.

Wow, when does your first frost hit?

@Scout
Usually September 11-20. Short growing season here.

Northern Manitoba?

@Sal
That’s crazy. We hit -30°C with windchill in Toronto recently, but -50°C is next level.

@Sal
Totally agree. Wind makes everything worse. I’ve been to London in February, and even though it was only -2°C, the damp cold there chilled me to the bone!

Do you use a greenhouse, or is it all outdoor growing?

Wow, where are you? Northern Sweden?

I feel lucky to have a growing season from April 1 to November 1. I’ll probably start peas and radishes in early March.

Come to the west coast for mild winters… but then watch your house burn in a wildfire. 70°F days in winter come at a price.
