My summer garden in full bloom

Just wanted to share a look at my garden this summer! It’s been a project of love and creativity.

Tell us more about that water ring!

So, we get planes flying over a lot, and I used to wave at them. Since I know how clear the view from up there can be (from my own flying days), I wanted to create something unique for people to see.

It’s actually shaped like an eyeball—okra plants serve as ‘eyelashes,’ though after the hurricane, it now looks like the eye got wind-swept, haha.

Our soil is sandy, so I cleared some dirt to make a sand ring that I can fill with water. The water flows down slowly due to the garden’s slight grade, and when it’s cloudy, it reflects the sky, making it look like the ‘white’ of the eye. I like the idea of organic sculptures that change with time, and animals seem to love drinking from it too. Thanks for asking!

This is seriously amazing.

The absolute coolest idea ever.

So inventive! ‘Beautiful’ doesn’t even cover it. How long have you been keeping this setup?

I started on it back in March. My neighbor and I share a patch of land between our houses that everyone’s just been mowing for decades, so I suggested we turn it into a garden, and she loved the idea!

I’ve been learning about hügelkultur gardening and was lucky to get a lot of sticks and logs from trees that fell (but thankfully didn’t hit our house) during the storm. The garden keeps evolving, and I’m hoping to get some good cloudy days to capture how it looks now!

Thanks so much for your kind words

@Nico
Thank you for all the details! You’re so kind and thoughtful. I’m excited to check out more of your posts!

Have you ever seen it from above? Any pilot friends or maybe a drone picture?

I keep hoping Google will update its satellite images, but no luck so far. I should definitely ask a friend with a drone though!

Same here, tell us all about this water ring! I’m thinking about getting ducks but want to avoid mosquitos. If it’s a self-sustaining setup, I’d love to make something similar!

This view is awesome!

Thanks! I can’t wait for Google’s satellite view to update so I can see the whole thing—it’s actually shaped like an eyeball.

You could try using the edit mode on OpenStreetMap to see if other satellite sources show it.

Looks like something straight out of The Shire!

OMG! It’s gorgeous!

Simply glorious.

This photo has such a great vibe. Love your garden!
