Kajari Melons… My First Harvest! Sweet Treats This Summer

This was my first time growing Kajari melons, and they turned out amazing. They were a perfect summer snack, sweet and refreshing. Anyone else growing these?

I’ve tried growing them but haven’t had much luck. The pattern on the melons is so unique though. I’m determined to keep trying!

Same here. I’ve yet to grow a single one successfully. And even if I did, Chip the Asshole Chipmunk would probably steal it! Still, I keep trying.

@Suki
Yeah, I get that split at maturity too. They still smell great, but it’s frustrating!

I totally get that. I’ve lost a few to splitting right at maturity too. No idea why, maybe it’s the heat? They seem to love my sub-tropical climate, though.

I had better luck growing them in a patch with slightly less than full sun. I live in a very hot and swampy 9a zone.

@Paxton
Interesting, I’ll try that next year. I had mine in full sun, and I’m in 8a. Here’s to another shot!

I was thinking about trying these. How do they taste? How many do you get per plant? And would you recommend them?

They taste like a mix of honeydew and cantaloupe, just sweet and melony without too much complexity. The skin is thinner than cantaloupe but a little tough. I got about 2-3 melons per vine before the plant died back. If you want a bigger harvest, you’d need to plant in succession. They’re super easy to grow and even let you know when they’re ripe—they smell amazing and pop right off the vine. I’d rate them 8/10 for sure!

Thanks for the info! That sounds awesome.

If you’re interested, the Millennial Gardener on YouTube has a great review on them too. He’s based in the US.

I tried these last fall, but mine didn’t turn out sweet at all. They tasted really musky and not pleasant. I wonder if something went wrong?

I grew them this year, and they were amazing! Super tasty, and I loved the small size. Plus, they were very productive for me.

These are my favorite melons right now. Can’t beat the taste and size.

I just ordered seeds for these! Can’t wait to see how they turn out next season.
