Saving monarchs, one butterfly at a time.
Butterfly bushes, while pretty, don’t actually help save monarchs since no North American caterpillars can eat them. I recently learned how invasive they are after planting one to replace another invasive plant. I probably shouldn’t have let my five-year-old choose the plant, lol.
There are cultivars that don’t spread. Mine don’t spread spontaneously, but they’re quite easy to grow from cuttings.
I got mine from an arboretum. They’re not allowed where I’m from, so I had no idea. It’s a very popular feeder in my garden, so it’s staying, but I’ll keep an eye on it!
Or at least feeding the heck out of them!
The butterfly bush is beautiful, but unfortunately, it’s an invasive species .
