Basil harvest success! This year I grew a massive basil plant and turned it into a gallon of homemade pesto. The aroma and taste are incredible.
I had basil trees in my greenhouse last year…about 3’ high. They were amazing. Made pesto with most of it.

Amazing? May I ask what’s your secret?
Probably growing in a greenhouse—less pests, more pesto.

Mostly good weather. This year was much cooler in June, and basil did really poorly.
Do you notice a significant change in the pesto when the plant’s gone to flower?

I do! I’ve always found it to be bitter once they’ve flowered.

Yes, they’re woody, which contributes to that taste. Likely waited too long to harvest.
You can dry those flowers and pull seeds out of them for next year.

IF they have been pollinated and seeds were allowed to grow. Otherwise, it’s just dried flowers.
It looks kind of woody. How did it taste?

I only use the leaves. Did you think I’m eating blended wood?
I would break that into smaller amounts and freeze them for year-round pesto.

Here’s a recipe for you to try!
Absolutely gorgeous! I can smell the beautiful aroma just looking at it!
I aspire to be like you.
