If you’re planning to grow cucumbers, just a heads-up—they’ll take over the entire box, even with a lattice. But hey, at least you’ll have plenty of cucumbers!

Maybe try a mini cucumber variety? It might take up less space.

Cucamelons could work well here, as long as you keep the space manageable.
@Rin
I love cucamelons! They look like tiny watermelons and taste like tangy cucumbers—so much fun to grow.

Wait, cucumbers are sour? I never noticed.

I had a similar experience! I planted four cucumber plants in a 20 ft box with trellises. They climbed the trellises, took over the fence, and even spread to the ground. I was picking 10 cucumbers a day for months. No one wanted more cucumbers by the end!
@Ira
That’s incredible! I can only hope mine are half as productive.

Just make sure your plants get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Have fun!

Tomato cages work great for cucumbers in a raised bed. Or you could build a sturdy lattice box for them to climb. For the rest of the space, consider growing leafy greens or herbs like dill if you want to pickle the cucumbers later. Arugula is also a fantastic option, especially if it’s hard to find fresh at your local store. So excited for your gardening journey!
Gardening is such a rewarding hobby! Enjoy your new obsession—it’s one of the healthiest addictions you can have.
@Davi
Thanks! I went with muncher cucumbers because they seemed small based on the seed packet. My garden box is about 13 cubic feet.
Leafy greens are always a great addition!

Go for peppers—they’re easy to grow and can handle pruning. Also, watch out for your basil. It might crowd out your cilantro if you’re not careful.
It depends on the basil variety and how often you trim it. My basil plants stay bushy because I prune them regularly.
I’m looking for good leafy green suggestions… what would you recommend?
You might want to thin out the basil and cilantro. They grow wide, and just a couple of plants can go a long way.

Thanks for the tip! We use them a lot in cooking, so I didn’t realize how much space they need.
Is the wood treated or painted? I’ve heard that you shouldn’t grow food in treated wood boxes because the plants could absorb harmful chemicals. Is that true?

Modern treated wood is generally safe because the chemicals are fixed in the wood and don’t leach out.
