Did I accidentally start a weed garden

I tossed a bunch of potting mix and some aster and wildflower seeds into this empty space we made after fixing up our backyard. The garden was full of weeds before. Am I just growing weeds that I’ve been caring for over the past month?

Looks soft and fluffy, but I’m not sure

Thanks a lot. I should have probably explained more

@West
Whenever you disturb soil, it often activates any seed that’s already there to start growing again. Did you plant seeds or just create the space and these came up?

If you like how it looks, keep it. After all, weed is just a label we give to certain plants. I’ve seen posts where people buy this reddish clover and I can’t get rid of it from my garden.

I had wild violets and dandelions all over my front lawn for years. I enjoyed it.

Since our house is in the back, anyone seeing it had to be on our property.

I love this patch of fluffy green. It could definitely be bunny food in my yard though.

Exactly, you totally understand.

Some of the leaves look like sulfur cosmos and zinnias. Let them bloom and see!

I see some wildflowers I can recognize! Leave it be - it will look amazing

In the fourth picture, the left corner has cosmos! Those are my favorite flowers!

Lots of people say it looks good, but if you really want the plants to thrive, you should weed out most of them. Go back and check your seed mix to see what you have. Google each flower type like “cosmos seedling” and then remove what you don’t want so each plant has enough space. If you want it to be dense, take everything out and grow ground cover. If you want it to climb, get some trellises and use vines.

Good luck with that!

@Shay
Totally agree. It needs thinning. These plants will compete for nutrients in this small space. Some may die, but most will struggle. You might get away with tighter planting but they’ll need more room than they have.

@Haru
Yes! The one-foot spacing I mentioned is still denser than what’s often recommended for bigger flowering plants, but it might work if you fertilize regularly. But overall, with what you have now, nothing will really thrive.

Creating a beautiful garden requires knowing when to remove some plants.

I spot some basil in there.

They’re only weeds if you don’t want them.

When you say wildflower seeds, is that from a mass-produced mix? The term wildflower isn’t very specific, so you might want to check for flowering plants that are native to your area.

Check the back of the seed packet and look up what the seedlings of those perennial flowers look like. Thinning annuals will help ensure you have plants returning each year.

Honestly, it looks really good.

Well, yes, but just remove them if you don’t want them.

Weeds are plants as well.
