Crazy weather... still got tomatoes outside in NJ and they keep flowering

Same thing here in NC. Mildew is bad but the plants keep going. Weird, right?

Yeah, mildew messes them up fast but they just keep pushing out leaves. I’d treat them if it wasn’t so late in the season.

Everybody on 3!!!
What do we call it?

They’re infected with powdery mildew but still growing! I’ve got 4-foot brown stems and they just keep sprouting new leaves as the old ones die off.

I’m jealous! Mine froze last week. Some of my peppers survived though, hoping the rest ripen before another freeze.

My peppers didn’t do well this year. First time growing from seed and veggies. I focus more on bramble berries. Tomatoes are everywhere though, I kill more than I grow but they keep popping up. I use kitchen scraps in my worm farm and the seeds spread out. I have a ton of green tomatoes but they won’t ripen. If they show any color, I bring them inside to ripen but the green ones just rot.

That’s amazing! Northern or southern NJ? Big difference, you know.

Exit 98, so pretty much in the middle.

Florida here. I’ve got a bunch of flowers and 4 tomatoes so far this round. They stopped for a month but now they’re back!

I know it’s not great with the weather, but I’ll take it.

Exactly!

It’s crazy. I grow them for my MIL in deck planters she can reach, but I ended up getting a stack of nursery pots left by landscapers, so I started transplanting volunteers and sprouted ones. Something was eating them, so I raised them up on horses and now I have a jungle! They grow in bunches of 6-10 tomatoes all over the place. Even have late bloomers inside and they’re already fruiting.

Love it!!

Next year, I’ll dig out a proper plot, put down a huge box with concrete wire as a trellis, and plant peppers and stuff around the perimeter. I’ll put marigolds around the edges to keep the rabbits away. I didn’t care for them at all, but they’ve turned into bushes and they don’t mind the cold. I’m all organic, so I’ve got mulch and topsoil I’ve made over the years. I’ll do a hugelkultur-style box with logs, sticks, and fresh leaves at the bottom, covered with 8” of soil. Seems to be working pretty well.

Lucky! We had one night dip into the low 30s, and that was enough to kill off my sensitive plants. It’s been in the 70s since. I couldn’t give away enough tomatoes though.

It’s been dropping to the low 30s here at night, but daytime temps are in the 50s to 70s. It slows down the ripening but doesn’t matter too much because I go out every day and pick the good ones up. There are still so many tomatoes on the plants.

Same here, it’s messing with my sense of time right now.

Yeah, it’s unusually warm this late in the season.

Looks delicious! Weird fall though – I harvested grapes last week in CT!

That’s awesome! I didn’t get much fruit this year, and my grapes still aren’t producing.
