Can someone help me identify this? It was growing just off my rock wall. I picked it today. Is it a watermelon?

Congrats, you are the proud owner of a squash

It’s a pumpkin, an unripe one. They are a squash-type plant.

Yep, looks like a young pumpkin to me too.

Your passion is awesome. I’m so glad this sun exists.

What a surprise, you got a squash right there!

That’s an unripe pumpkin

Cut it open and see

Cutting tomorrow. Will report findings!

Melon family varieties will cross-pollinate, so you’re seeing some random gourd/melon that is a “volunteer” from a previous year’s garden nearby.

Interesting! Are these edible or no, or depends?

@Scout
It’s kinda hit-or-miss. I have these every year (courtesy of squirrels I assume) and while they won’t be harmful for you, some may be more bitter than others. I’d guess 1 in 5 I get are inedible (bitter) but the others are ok. I’ve never gotten sick from one.

@Keegan
They can be harmful! https://gardendrum.com/2015/08/25/german-man-dies-after-eating-home-grown-zucchini/

TIL. Will make sure the wife sees this. She has the hippie tendency when gardening.

@Keegan
If a squash is extremely bitter, it could be a sign it’s high in cucurbitacin due to cross-pollination. Eating an extremely bitter squash can actually cause toxic squash syndrome, which is harmful. Think really bad food poisoning symptoms, and in extreme cases, it can cause swelling in the kidneys and liver. Some people even experience hair loss as a result of toxic squash syndrome.

Looks like a fat round zucchini. Or like a pumpkin cross-pollinated with a zucchini :woman_shrugging:

I’m thinking some variety of a gourd, so same family as squash and pumpkin

Marrow? It’s the right colour but they’re usually longer…

Be careful. Could be poisonous.

Pumpkin, it will turn orange even off the vine.
